Omaha police are trying to determine why a 15-year-old boy started shooting at officers during a traffic stop Friday and whether the officer who shot the boy acted properly.

Police said late Friday the boy remained in critical condition at the Nebraska Medical Center, but he was stable. The boy's name has not been released.

Police say the boy was in a car that was stopped near Interstate 80 in central Omaha Friday afternoon for having expired plates. After the car was stopped, the boy ran and then fired at police.

An Omaha police officer shot the boy in the chest, and he was taken to the hospital.

Two 20-year-old Omaha men who were also in the car were arrested on suspicion of possessing marijuana with the intent to deliver.
