Along the Missouri River

Gov. Dave Heineman will take an aerial tour of flood conditions in and around South Sioux City Tuesday afternoon. The governor's tour will begin about 1:45 p.m. and is expected to last most of the afternoon, his office said.

Joining the governor will be Maj. Gen. Judd Lyons, adjutant general of the Nebraska National Guard; Al Berndt, assistant director of the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency, and a FEMA representative. The group will be joined on an aerial tour of Missouri River flooding, as well as a levee and secondary levee in South Sioux City, by Mayor Bill McLarty and City Administrator Lance Hedquist.

Former Dana dorm serving as shelter

BLAIR -- One of the former Dana College dormitories in Blair has reopened as a shelter for people displaced by flooding along the Missouri River.

The Blair Chamber of Commerce decided to offer the dorm as a shelter because a number of people have had to leave their homes because of the flooding. At least 40 people have signed up to move into the dorm and some already are living there.

Harriet Waite with the Chamber of Commerce said the community is lucky the current owner of the dorm was willing to help. The college closed last year after running up an $11 million debt.

Volunteers raised more than $1,000 at last weekend's parade in Blair to help cover the shelter's cost. People also have donated supplies, toys and food.

SWAT team helps in S. Sioux City

The Nebraska State Patrol has mobilized SWAT team members to aid in flood relief efforts in South Sioux City. Fifteen patrol SWAT team members will assist the Nebraska Army National Guard in place.

The Nebraska State Patrol will provide security at several locations in the community. The Nebraska Army National Guard has 12 soldiers monitoring the levees.

The patrol also has two Light Armored Vehicles available to provide flood assistance. The LAV is an all-terrain, all-weather, light-armored carrier. An amphibious vehicle, the LAV is capable of forging streams, rivers and inland waterways. Though the LAV's are not deployed, they are on standby and available to provide assistance as needed.

49 Guard members on flood duty

Nebraska National Guard officials say the Guard has 49 soldiers and airmen working in active support of the emergency.

The Nebraska National Guard also has pre-positioned sandbags and slingload straps at Martin Field near South Sioux City and at the Nebraska National Guard air base near Lincoln. Two UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters are available in Lincoln if officials need to conduct aerial sandbagging operations.
