A 37-year-old rural Bennet man is in stable condition two days after shooting himself in the leg, the Lancaster County sheriff said.

Michael S. Peterson was cleaning his .40-caliber Glock semi-automatic handgun at 5:30 p.m. Saturday when it went off and hit him in the left leg,  Sheriff Terry Wagner said.

Wagner said he was taken to Bryan West with a non-life-threatening injury. Hospital staff said he was in fair condition Monday afternoon.
