The Lincoln Board of Education will hear public comment Wednesday and Thursday on three proposals that would change attendance area boundaries for many Lincoln elementary and middle schools.

If approved, the proposals could lead to two schools being closed — Hawthorne Elementary School, 300 S. 48th St., and Dawes Middle School, 5130 Colfax Ave.

The first map the board is considering would affect elementary schools.

If approved, changes at the schools north of Lakeview, McPhee, Elliott, Randolph, Eastridge and Pyrtle elementary schools would take effect during the fall of 2009. Changes at those six elementary schools and all elementary schools south of them would take effect fall 2008.

The other two proposed maps would affect middle schools. The major difference between the two middle school maps is the second does not include Dawes.

Both middle school maps would take effect in fall 2009.

The school board plans to host public meetings on the proposals at Hawthorne and Dawes in late August or early September and could vote on the proposals Oct. 9.

The following are lists of schools that will not see any changes and those that will see significant changes:

Schools that would see significant reductions in attendance area

* Adams Elementary, Tamarin Ridge Road and Jacobs Creek Drive in south Lincoln: The elementary school map would create an attendance area for the new Adams Elementary, which is scheduled to be completed by fall 2008. That attendance area would be bounded on the west by Southwest 84th Street; on the north by an irregular line extending along West Old Cheney Road starting at Southwest 84th Street east to South Folsom Street, south to West Denton Road, east roughly along West Denton to South 14 Street, south to Pine Lake Road, east to South 27th Street, south on 27th Street to Yankee Hill Road, and east on Yankee Hill Road to South 40th Street; and on the east by South 40th Street starting at Yankee Hill Road south to Rokeby Road.

Adams would be the southwesternmost elementary school in the district.

* Beattie Elementary, 1901 Calvert St.: The elementary map would add an area roughly bounded by West Van Dorn, Southwest 112th Street, West Old Cheney Road and South Seventh Street to the Beattie area. The area bounded by Old Cheney Road, South 14th Street, South Folsom Street and West Denton Road would remain with Beattie.

* Campbell Elementary, 2200 Dodge St.: The elementary school map would move an area bounded by Interstate 80, Superior Street and North 14th Street to the new Kooser area. Many of those living east of I-80 and north of Folkways Boulevard between North 14th Street and North 27th Street and north of Crossbridge Road between North 27th Street and Salt Creek also would move to Kooser area.

* Dawes Middle, 5130 Colfax Ave.: Middle School Proposal 1 would leave Dawes Middle School on the map with a west boundary of 27th Street and include an area bounded by 70th Street, Cornhusker Highway, roughly North 84th Street and approximately Yosemite Drive to and along Colfax Avenue on the south.

Middle School Proposal 2 would remove Dawes from the attendance area maps.

* Goodrich Middle, 4600 Lewis Ave.: Both middle school proposals would remove a portion bounded on the west by a line roughly along North Park Road; on the north by a line roughly along West Highland Boulevard and Superior Street; and on the south and east by a diagonal line along Interstate 80. That area would be moved to the new Schoo Middle School.

Both middle school proposals also would remove a portion of the Goodrich attendance area bounded on the west by 14th Street, on the east by 27th Street and on the south by a line just south of Morton Street. Those homes would be moved to the new Schoo Middle School.

* Hawthorne Elementary, 300 S. 48th St.: The elementary school map would close Hawthorne as an elementary school in 2008. If that happened, those living west of South 48th would attend Randolph. Those east of South 48th Street would attend Eastridge.

* Hill Elementary, 5230 Tipperary Trail: The elementary map would move an area roughly bounded by Emerald Drive, South 27th Street, Browning Street and South 34th Street to Old Cheney Road and South 29th Street back to Emerald Drive to the Rousseau area.

* Humann Elementary, 6720 Rockwood Lane: The elementary map would move an area roughly bounded by Nebraska 2, South 40th Street, Old Cheney Road and South 48th Street to the Calvert area.

It also would move an area roughly bounded by Nebraska 2, South 48th, Old Cheney and South 56th Street to the Zeman area.

* Kooser Elementary, near 14th Street and Alvo Road in north Lincoln: The elementary school map would create an attendance area for this new school, which is scheduled to be completed by the fall of 2009. The attendance area would include all homes north and east of a line that starts along U.S. 34 starting at Northwest 27th Street, extending southeast to Interstate 80, southwest along Interstate 80 to Superior Street, east to 14th Street, north to Fletcher Avenue, east to Rockford Drive, southeast to Folkways Boulevard, east to 27th Street, and north to Crossbridge Drive, east from Crossbridge Drive and ending at about 38th Street.

* Lux Middle, 7800 High St.: Both middle school maps propose adding to the Lux attendance area numerous neighborhoods that are part of nearby attendance areas. They include all neighborhoods generally east of 70th Street and northeast of Nebraska 2.

* Maxey Elementary, 5200 S. 75th St.: The elementary map would include all areas that were previously in the Calvert area bounded by Pioneers Boulevard, South 70th Street, Nebraska 2 and all areas eastward currently in the LPS district.

Also included would be the area roughly bounded by South 70th Street, Nebraska 2 and Yankee Hill Road.

* Mickle Middle, 2500 N. 67th St.: Middle School Proposal 1 would move to the Dawes attendance area much of the northernmost Mickle attendance area. That area is bounded roughly on the west by 70th Street and on the south by Yosemite Drive to about 76th Street and Colfax Avenue from 76th Street to about 88th Street.

Middle School Proposal 2 would move to the Mickle attendance area an area now in Dawes bounded by North 27th Street on the west, Adams Street from 27th Street to 48th Street, south along 48th Street to Garland Street connecting to the existing Mickle attendance area.

* Pershing Elementary, 6402 Judson St.: The elementary map would move an area roughly bounded by Adams Street, North 56th Street, St. Paul Avenue from North 56th Street to North 63rd Street, Huntington Avenue from North 63rd Street to North 70th Street and North 70th Street to the Brownell area.

* Roper Elementary, 2323 S. Coddington Ave.: The elementary school map would move an area roughly bounded by West G Street, Southwest 70th Street, West A Street and U.S. 77 to the Lakeview area.

It also would move an area roughly bounded by West Van Dorn Street, Southwest 48th Street, West Old Cheney Road and South Third Street to the Beattie area.

* Schoo Middle, Stonebrook Parkway and Aster Road in north Lincoln: Both middle school maps would create an attendance area for this new northwest Lincoln school, scheduled to be completed by fall 2009. Schoo’s attendance area includes all homes north and west of a line that extends along Holdrege starting at about Northwest 70th Street east to about Northwest 34th Street, then south to West Vine Street, east to Northwest 27th Street, south to Interstate 80, northeast along I-80 to about 10th Street, south roughly along 10th Street to Morton Street, roughly along Morton Street to 27th Street and bounded by 27th Street on the east.

* Zeman Elementary, 4900 S. 52nd St.: The elementary school map would move homes north of Pioneers Boulevard now in the Zeman attendance area to the Holmes area.

It also would move areas currently within the LPS district roughly bounded by Pine Lake Road, South 40th, Rokeby Road and South 56th to the Humann district.

It would move an area roughly bounded by Nebraska 2, South 70th and Yankee Hill Road to the Maxey area.
