The Legislature's Government, Military and Veterans Affairs Committee killed the county consolidation bill (LB826) on Thursday.
The bill had a fair amount of opposition, said Lincoln Sen. Bill Avery, chairman of the committee and a co-sponsor of the bill. It was too radical a proposal at this point, he said.
The bill would have required the special legislative planning committee to develop a plan that would reduce the number of counties by 30. Senators on that committee already are looking at consolidation issues, Avery said.
