SCHUYLER — A northeast Nebraska investment adviser will announce his Senate candidacy Tuesday, joining the field that includes just one other declared candidate and a number of maybes.

Republican Pat Flynn, 48, founded Flynn and Associates in downtown Schuyler, and works with individuals and organizations on insurance and investments. He also serves as volunteer youth minister with high school teens at a Schuyler church.

Flynn’s online biography says he has not always led an exemplary life, and “had some encounters with the law regarding alcohol and marijuana when he was in his twenties.”

His communications director, Jon Shipman, said Flynn decided to be upfront about his past.

“He feels he can identify with people who’ve been through rough patches,” Shipman said.

Flynn received a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1981.

Attorney General Jon Bruning is the only other declared candidate for the seat held by U.S. Sen. Chuck Hagel. The incumbent has not said whether he’ll seek a third term, seek the presidency or leave politics.
