More than two years after a stabbing victim drove himself to a hospital at 3:15 in the morning, Lincoln police have arrested his alleged assailant.
Thomas King, 55, 140 S. 30th St., was arrested Thursday on suspicion of first-degree assault, Officer Katie Flood said.
His now-34-year-old son, who was not arrested, was driving King's red 2003 Ford Ranger early on Aug. 22, 2009, at 48th Street and Old Cheney Road.
Andrew Wiese, then 27, was driving a white pickup in the same direction. At the time, police said the driver of the white pickup got into a "rolling argument" with the men in the Ranger.
Both trucks stopped near 48th and Meredeth streets, and Wiese got out of his truck and into a physical struggle with the driver of the extended-cab Ranger, Flood said.
Wiese had the passenger on the ground when another man, who police have identified as King, got out of the other truck, came up from behind, and sliced his throat.
Wiese was stabbed multiple times in the neck, chest, back and shoulders, Flood said. One of the cuts was more than a foot long. He required surgery to repair the damage, but survived his injuries.
"This could have been another homicide," Flood said at the time of the assault.
Police had little to go on initially. Wiese did not know his assailants and described the man who stabbed him as Hispanic, 25 to 30 years old and 5-foot-10, 250 to 320 pounds. King was 53 at the time and is white. Jail records list his height as 5-foot-11 and his weight as 230.
Police have not identified a third person who Wiese said stayed in the Ford Ranger during the assault, Flood said Friday.
The red Ranger was photographed at a nearby gas station on the day of the incident, and still images were placed on the Lincoln-Lancaster County Crimestoppers website in an effort to identify the suspects.
Flood said police got a Crimestoppers tip in April 2011 that King had sold the Ranger a week after the assault. They confirmed the tip, interviewed King and his son, and arrested King.
