A man shot by police Saturday evening was in stable condition and under police protection Sunday.
Officer Tim Dolberg, who's been a commissioned officer for about a year and a half, shot the man, 18-year-old Brian D. Hassenplug of Lincoln, in the arm.
Police say Hassenplug tried to run Dolberg over and rammed two parked vehicles, including a squad car, near an apartment complex at 4300 Cornhusker Highway.
Dolberg, who was not injured, is on administrative leave, Lincoln Police Chief Tom Casady said Sunday.
Police declined to release the name of the hospital Hassenplug was taken to out of concern for his safety, Capt. Jim Thoms said.
"We don't want anybody to know where he's at just yet," Thoms said.
Casady said an officer was guarding Hassenplug at the hospital.
"Mr. Hassenplug has not been particularly forthcoming with us," Casady said. "As is his right."
Police continue to look for another person involved in the disturbance that started the incident.
Just before 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Dolberg was sent to a disturbance call about two men throwing things from their cars and yelling, Casady said.
When Dolberg arrived at the scene, one of the two cars sped off as Hassenplug, in the other car, tried to run down the officer, police say.
Dolberg fired a single round, Casady said, which hit Hassenplug.
Hassenplug sped off, and was later found near 27th and Orchard streets, police say. As of Sunday evening, police had yet to find the driver of the other car, who has not been identified.
Hassenplug remained in the hospital Sunday evening. Casady said he was under arrest on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and possession of stolen property, as well as a felony warrant from Lancaster County for alleged possession of burglary tools.
Hassenplug failed to appear for a court hearing earlier this year regarding an alleged probation violation, according to the Lancaster County Attorney's office.
In December, a Lancaster County District Court judge sentenced Hassenplug to 48 months of probation for third-degree assault and possession of burglar's tools.
He also had been charged with two counts of burglary and two counts of felony theft by receiving, but those charges were dismissed.
