When a clerk at a South Lincoln U-Stop declined to open the cash register during a robbery attempt Wednesday night, the man with the pink bat started swinging.

The clerk was not injured and no money was taken from the convenience store at 3747 S. 27th St., Lincoln Police Capt. Jim Davidsaver said.

But, he said, the man caused about $1,000 damage when he smashed a Nebraska Lottery computer, a Nebraska Cornhuskers commemorative cup display and more with the baseball bat he brought into the U-Stop at about 11:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Police learned that the man got into the passenger seat of a Jeep Liberty and left the store.

Lincoln Police Officer Katie Flood said witnesses provided a license plate and vehicle description, and officers found the Jeep at BryanLGH Medical Center West at about 1:30 a.m. Thursday. There, they arrested Robert P. Allen, 26, 1944 Sumner St., Apt. 2.

A pink bat was recovered, Davidsaver said.

Davidsaver said police believe Allen also is  responsible for an armed robbery about 45 minutes before the gas station incident. He said a 20-year-old man told police he was approached by a man near 33rd Street and Woods Avenue. The man had a pink bat and demanded money.

Davidsaver said the man gave him a dollar and a cigarette lighter and was not injured.

Allen was arrested on suspicion of two counts each of robbery and use of a weapon to commit a felony.
