The man who Lincoln police believe was at the wheel during a fatal drive-by shooting last August has been arrested in Mississippi.

O’Dari Wiley, 21, has been wanted since mid-May on suspicion of second-degree murder for the Aug. 6 shooting that left Doyle Bryant III dead.

Wiley is being held for extradition in Clarksdale, Miss., Sheriff Terry Wagner said. He has waived extradition, and deputies soon will bring him back to Nebraska where he faces 10 felonies.

It’s the second arrest in the case. In October, police arrested 23-year-old Terrell L. Jones, whose currently fighting charges that alleged he was an accessory to the crime.

Police say they’re still working to arrest the shooter.

“We continue to chip away at it obviously because we’re continuing to piece this thing together,” Assistant Chief Jim Peschong said.

The frustrating part is that police believe there are others who know what happened, who haven’t come forward.

Peschong said if people lie to investigators and get wrapped up in the middle, they could end up with  charges of false information or aiding and abetting.

Someone’s actions led to a man’s death, he said, and they have to be held responsible for it.

“I’m confident we’re going to get there. It’s just a matter of when and timing,” Peschong said.

The night of Aug. 5, Bryant and his brother, Daryl, and two friends rented a car in Omaha and headed to Lincoln to celebrate Doyle Bryant completing barber school with a popular Omaha DJ’s show at a club in downtown Lincoln.

At 1:45 a.m. Aug. 6, they headed north on 27th Street to go back to Omaha when a gold car pulled alongside them and shot into their car not far from Toys “R” Us.

Police said Bryant, 28, of Omaha, was shot in the chest. His brother, Daryl, and Lynell Green both were shot in the leg. A fourth man in the car, Laron Tolbert, wasn’t hit.

Green, who was driving, crashed into a light pole, then turned the car around, his friend dying.

Police believe the suspects in the gold car chased the wrong car after a fight outside Opulence Ultra Club, 1033 O St., Peschong said.

Police talked to Wiley, outside a party in Havelock, within two hours of the shooting.

Peschong said an officer handling the “wild party call” saw a gold Mercury Grand Marquis with large rims matching the description that had gone out over the police radio of the car involved.

A little more than a month later, a federal grand jury indicted Wiley on suspicion of conspiracy to distribute cocaine in Lincoln, the result of a dual investigation involving the narcotics unit and homicide detectives after the shooting.

Peschong said for the past couple of years dual investigations pretty much have been standard practice because often people involved in homicides seem to have connections with narcotics activity in the community.

“As they share information between the two of them it gives them both leads to help build stronger cases. It’s been a real good thing for us,” Peschong said.

He said police believe Wiley and Jones both are members of a Lincoln gang called the Vice Lords, with 25 known members.

In May, Wiley pleaded guilty to the conspiracy charge in a federal courtroom in Lincoln. He’s set for sentencing in August.

Then there are the 10 new felony charges.

Peschong said investigators are still doing interviews and waiting for evidence to come back from the FBI.

“I don’t know when, but I think it will eventually wind up coming,” he said.

Peschong asked anyone with information to call Lincoln police at 441-7204 or Crime Stoppers at 475-3600.
