A rural Plymouth hog farmer who last month told the Journal Star of hard times in the industry died Wednesday.
Brian Brandt, 47, died at BryanLGH Medical Center West after suffering a stroke, according to his obituary.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Beatrice. He will be buried in rural Plymouth.
Last month, Brandt estimated he had lost about $1.2 million over the past 18 months on his 1,200-head confinement operation. He also held a partnership stake in a Kansas operation, which was also struggling.
He said in June that bulging pork supplies, rising grain prices, a worldwide recession and April's "swine flu" scare battered his industry.
"I've been through some big crashes," he said, "and I've never seen anything like this."
Survivors include his wife, Susan, and children Jacob and Jamie.
