Old Glory will be honored and celebrated at this year’s Lincoln Philatelic Exposition or LINPEX Stamp Show, an annual event held by the Lincoln Stamp Club for more than 40 years.

The show will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 23 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 24 at the Howard Johnson Motor Lodge, 5250 Cornhusker Highway.

Club member Joel Johnson said the theme for the 2008 show and show cover — a special commemorative envelope with collectible stamps — is Celebrate “Old Glory” 50 Stars, 50 States on U.S. Stamps Over 50 Times.”

Each show cover will have the following cachet of stamps:

* The first U.S. flag stamp with 50 stars.

* A U.S. flag over the White House.

* A U.S. flag over the U.S. Capitol.

* A U.S. flag with the words: “I pledge allegiance…”

* An “Old Glory” stamp.

Gov. Dave Heineman; Carl Marks, the president of the Purple Heart Society of Nebraska; Lincoln Postmaster Kerry Kowalski and other dignitaries have been invited to an 11 a.m. cover signing ceremony Saturday morning.

In special recognition of the stamp show and to honor the millions of service men and women who have defended the U.S. flag, the governor has proclaimed Feb. 23-24 as Celebrate Old Glory Days in Nebraska.

Johnson said the club selected the U.S. flag as this year’s theme because it was a good way to follow last year’s theme of honoring veterans past and present.

“We thought the theme was appropriate to show how proud we are of our flag as others sometimes around the world don’t treat our flag with much respect,” Johnson said.

An insert featuring the history of the U.S. flag, prepared by local historian Jim McKee, will be included with each cover, which will be available for $2 apiece both days. Inside each cover, there also will be a mint copy of the first 50-star U.S. flag stamp issued in 1960.

Covers can also be obtained by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to: Lincoln Stamp Club, 3240 Sheridan Court, Lincoln, NE 68506.

Ten dealers will be on hand to buy, sell and appraise stamps. Club members also will be available to evaluate inherited stamps or individual stamp collections and answer questions.

Children can also “hunt” for stamps at a popular penny-per-stamp table.

A silent auction of 18 mint first-class postage U.S. flag stamps set in a nice frame also will be held. The stamps feature postage stamp increases from 4 cents to 41 cents.

Between 2,000 and 3,000 people attended last year’s show. The Lincoln Stamp Club has about 50 members. For more information visit the club’s Web site at: www.lincolnstampclub.org.
