Residents of a southeast Lincoln neighborhood were evacuated Wednesday night after a car struck a home, severing a gas line.

According to Lincoln Fire and Rescue Capt. Mark Gronewold, around 9:40 p.m. a Chevy Impala struck a brick home at 5318 S. 53rd St., knocking the gas meter off the the wall of the house and filling it with gas. Two people inside the house safely exited.

The first responders to arrive evacuated nearby homes, and firefighters shut off gas to the home before airing it out, Gronewold said.

There were no reports Wednesday of injury to the male driver or neighborhood residents. No further information was available about the driver, the cause of the accident or damage to the home.
