Warm and wet on the whole, 2007 in Lincoln ended much as it began: cold and wet, according to the National Weather Service.
Weather-wise in Lincoln, 2007 could best be described as fickle.
Warm and wet on the whole, Lincoln started 2007 cold in February and unseasonably warm in March, saw a damaging April freeze, a wet May, dry June and July, and a hot and moist August, moved into a mild fall and dry November, and ended cold and wet in December, according to the National Weather Service’s 2007 Lincoln Annual Climate Summary released Tuesday.
The year started out normal, but turned cold and snowy in February and unseasonably warm in March. That warm stretch ended in April when a late freeze killed much well-advanced spring vegetation, including flowers and fruiting trees, the weather service reported.
Record-setting downpours led May to become the eighth-wettest in history for Lincoln.
But all that ended in June and July — the eighth-driest June and July in the city’s history, according to the weather service.
July ended humid, leading to a 38-day string of nights with temperatures no cooler than the upper 60s, beating the previous record of consecutive days with lows above 65 set in 1935 by 11 nights.
Those rollercoaster temperatures ended in September and October — mild months that saw plenty of dry and pleasant weather.
October ended soggy with 2.56 more inches of rain than normal. It also ended warm, as the first fall freeze came on Oct. 23, 17 days later than average in recent years.
Things dried up in November, which had just 0.05 inch of precipitation.
And a high of 78 on Nov. 18 was the latest date in the season for such a warm temperature on record, according to the weather service.
Lincoln ended 2007 much as it started it — cold and snowy.
The December average temperature of 24.3 degrees was 2.2 degrees below normal. The 2.09 inches of precipitation was 1.23 inches above normal.
And freezing rain fell on four days: Dec. 1, 8, 10 and 11.
