Lincoln seniors would lose two additional ActivAge Centers — the Belmont and Maxey locations — under a plan to trim $444,000 more from the Lincoln Area Agency on Aging.

Some senior outings, events, and other activities also would end.

Those cuts are in addition to more than $350,000 announced earlier in the budgeting process, including closing the Calvert ActivAge Center and eliminating Lifetime Health, which provides senior fitness, health clinics, screenings and education.

Agency director June Pederson laid out her most recent decisions in an e-mail sent to the Lincoln City Council before Monday’s budget meeting.

The council did not discuss her plan at the hearing, but afterward, Council Member Ken Svoboda said he was interested in restoring some funding to Lifetime Health. “It has such a great value to seniors,” Svoboda said.

The bulk of Pederson’s second round of cuts came from eliminating $150,000 by cutting staff and no longer offering some senior outings and activities.

Closing the Maxey and Belmont centers saves more than $100,000.

Seniors attending those sites would likely be re-routed to one of three that would remain open: Downtown, 1005 O St.; Northeast, 6310 Platte Ave.; or the Lake Center, 2400 S. 11th St. The one-day-a-week Asian Center also would remain.

Pederson provided her recommendations by e-mail because she is on vacation.

Council member Jonathan Cook said he wants to discuss the cuts with her when she returns. He also wants to hear seniors’ thoughts on the additional cuts. “I’m looking for public feedback.”
