Another teenager has been arrested in the Monday burglary of more than 80 guns from a sporting goods store at SouthPointe Pavilions.

Dominique Barton, 18, was taken into custody Tuesday after Lincoln Police Officer Sid Yardley spotted him sitting in front of 2224 Dudley St.

Investigators still are looking for 53 stolen handguns, Lincoln Police Chief Tom Casady said.

“Our nightmare is that these guns already have been thrown up into the wind and that we’ll recover them slowly over the course of many years as they surface in other crimes,” he said Wednesday.

So far, police have made four arrests, the latest coming Tuesday afternoon when Yardley saw Barton.

Police had been looking for Barton, who they believe broke into Scheels All Sports early Monday with Cleophus Collier, 17. According to court records, police believe the two shattered windows in the walk-in doors at the store at 1:39 a.m. Monday and left eight minutes later with 78 handguns, four high-powered rifles and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

Collier and Barton, whose last known address is 1256 S. 26th St., Apt. 5, allegedly had talked about selling the guns, court records say.

On Wednesday, prosecutors accused Barton of theft by receiving stolen property. The felony charge carries a possible one- to 20-year sentence.

Barton was escorted into the courtroom at 2 p.m. Wednesday and stood as Deputy Lancaster County Attorney Andy Jacobsen told him the charge and possible penalties.

Barton said he didn’t have money to hire his own attorney. County Judge Jean Lovell approved a court-appointed attorney and set his next court appearance for next week.

She also set his percentage bond at $40,000.

A day earlier, at the same time, Collier, Michael Nimox, 17, and Jameal Gaines, 16, stood before Lovell. Because they are minors, they are being held at the Lancaster County Juvenile Detention Center. Barton is in custody at Lancaster County Jail.

Lovell set a court date next week to consider transferring the cases of the three minors to juvenile court.

As for the stolen guns, police had recovered 29 by Wednesday.

Casady said they found 26, including four high-powered rifles, at the 1724 L St. apartment where they found Collier and Nimox.

Authorities say they found a loaded .40 caliber Glock at Gaines’ house at 1237 N. 21st St. early Tuesday.

They also found three handguns in a trash bin near 26th and Dudley streets on Tuesday. They thought all three had been stolen from Scheels, but Casady said one didn’t match up to records on the stolen guns.

Also on Tuesday, police found a stolen 2000 Oldsmobile Alero they believe is connected to the SouthPointe burglary. The car was found Tuesday evening behind a vacant house near 18th and M streets. Inside it, Casady said, police found a pistol magazine, confirming investigators’ suspicion it was involved in the crime, Casady said.

He said police have interviewed dozens of people, and they’ll continue to work to find the remaining 53 guns stolen.

“There obviously are more suspects because if nothing else there are more people in possession of stolen property,” Casady said.

There’s a slim chance, he said, that they could be hidden in a cache somewhere.

“But I doubt that’s the case. My guess is that some of these guns have been distributed and they are being possessed by other people who know that they’re stolen — and that’s a crime,” Casady said.

Asked if he planned to talk with gun shop owners about security, the chief said he didn’t.

Scheels had excellent security, he said. The store is in a well-lit area, and it has a metal gate inside its glass doors.

Casady said an unfortunate set of circumstances led to police not being notified more promptly after the store’s alarm sounded.
