There’s something for everyone at this year’s Astronomy Day on May 10.

Special events will be at Mueller Planetarium inside Morrill Hall, 14th and U streets on the UNL City Campus, and at Hyde Observatory in Holmes Lake Park, near 70th Street and Normal Boulevard.

From 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Mueller Planetarium will offer fun, educational astronomy activities for the family. Exhibits and displays will line the main floor of the museum. And there will be displays of telescopes, computer astronomy and astronomical photos by members of Lincoln’s Prairie Astronomy Club.

Throughout the afternoon, there will be special demonstrations such as using a telescope for observing, robotics and hands-on science activities.

The electronic display, called “ViewSpace,” from the Space Telescope Science Institute will project beautiful images from the Hubble Space Telescope in the planetarium lobby.

Special showings of the fulldome show: “Extreme Planets,” will be offered at 11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m, 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. The 35-minute show takes audiences to some of the most exciting newly discovered extra-solar planets and is narrated by Rene Auberjonois, best known for his role in the TV series: “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.”

The all-day event will conclude with a free open house “star party” from sundown to 11 p.m. at Hyde Memorial Observatory.

Museum admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children and high school and college students. UNL students and children under 4 years are admitted free.

Planetarium show tickets for Astronomy Day will be sold in the planetarium lobby: adults $3; children, and high school students are $2.

Visitors to the event will have a chance to win a Meade computerized telescope valued at $300.

Forms for the telescope drawing will be available at the front of the museum. You do not need to have purchased admission to be eligible or be present to win.  See details at the planetarium Web site at www.spacelaser.com.
