Lancaster County sheriff's deputies confer at U.S. 6 and Amberly Road in Waverly, where a person was hit and killed by a train Thursday afternoon.

A man died after being hit by a BNSF train in Waverly on Thursday afternoon.

The man was walking east along the tracks at about 1:40 p.m. when the train approached from behind him, sounding its horn several times, Lancaster County Sheriff's Capt. Tom Brookhouser said. The man didn't get out of the way, and was hit.

Investigators are still trying to identify the man and interviewing witnesses, Brookhouser said.

It is unclear whether the man allowed himself to be hit intentionally or by accident.

The location is about a block northwest of Waverly High School.
