A Lincoln woman was hit and killed by an errant vehicle as she prepared to climb into a tow truck along Interstate 435 outside snowy Kansas City, Missouri, on Tuesday.

The crash happened at about 10:45 a.m. in the southbound lanes near Northwest River Road, southwest of the Kansas City International Airport, according to the Missouri Highway Patrol.

The woman had been a passenger in a 2006 Volvo that slid off the road near the interstate bridge over the Missouri River. As police worked to get her and two other Lincoln residents out of the car and into a tow truck, a second vehicle lost control and hit her, the highway patrol reported.

The woman was identified as Annabelle F. Kovar, 79, of Lincoln. Two others, driver Roswitha I. Frerichs, 62, and Craig A. Frerichs, 63, suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment.

Three people inside the other vehicle were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, according to the highway patrol.
