Lincoln police will have extra officers working Saturday to combat over-serving in bars and reduce drunken driving on St. Patrick's Day, the department announced in a news release.
The extra officers will be conducting tavern checks across the city and high-visibility traffic enforcement focused on drunken driving and traffic violations, the release said.
The department will also work with the Nebraska State Patrol, which is providing additional troopers for traffic enforcement.
Funding for the extra officers comes from a grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety.
"It is our hope that, by conducting this special detail, we can help reduce the number of traffic accidents and intoxicated drivers while promoting responsible sales and service of alcoholic beverages," the release said.
