A man wanted in connection with a deadly shooting in Hastings was arrested late Monday near the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's East Campus, with a stolen gun in his car, police say.

University police spotted Deante H. Mullen, 19, of Lincoln, at the Casey's General Store at 3291 Holdrege St. around 11 p.m., said Lincoln Police Officer Angela Sands.

Officers knew Mullen had warrants for theft and failure to appear in court. They tried to detain him, Sands said, but he ran toward his car.

The officers kept him from fleeing or grabbing the stolen handgun, which they later found tucked between the driver's seat and the console, Sands said. Lincoln police arrived moments after the university officers, and Mullen was arrested without further incident.

Mullen was taken to the Lancaster County jail on the warrants and on suspicion of possession of a stolen gun, six drug charges, possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony and failure to comply.

Hastings police said Mullen is a suspect in the shooting death of Jose Hansen, 19, of Hastings, who was found in an alleyway there Monday morning.

Mullen lived in Hastings at some point before 2013, according to juvenile court records.

A Lincoln Public Schools spokeswoman said Mullen attended high school in Lincoln for 14 months, first at Northeast in the 2013-14 school year and then at Southeast the next year.
