Lincoln Electric System is encouraging its customers to be on the alert for a potential scam.
People are calling day cares and demanding money, claiming to represent LES, the utility said in a news release. "Scammers threaten to disconnect customers’ service and urge them to supply their credit or debit card information, pay immediately with cash or purchase payment cards to avoid losing their power."
LES says it does not collect payments in person at homes or businesses, and would not call customers requesting immediate payment.
Anyone who believes they have been contacted by a scammer should not give away any private information, and call law enforcement immediately.
LES says its databases have not been hacked.
