A Lancaster County jury has found a 57-year-old Lincoln man not guilty of third-degree sexual assault of a child and intentional child abuse.

Jurors got the case for deliberations at about 11:30 a.m. Monday and on Tuesday told a judge they were deadlocked on whether William Connot was guilty of a lesser offense of negligent child abuse, a misdemeanor.

Connot had been accused of touching a 7-year-old girl's butt under her clothes.

Court documents say he had been drinking at the time of the incident on Aug. 18, 2016.

Connot told police he didn't remember it happening that day, but said he had patted the girl's butt cheek before as a term of endearment, not for sexual gratification.

The Lancaster County Attorney's office could retry him on the misdemeanor child abuse charge.
