A former Waverly man has been sentenced to 40 to 50 years in prison for sexually abusing a young girl over the course of several years.
William P. Gilliam, 45, who had moved to the Joplin, Missouri, area, was arrested there last May and extradited to Lincoln in November to face charges here.
He later pleaded guilty to first-degree sexual assault of a child.
Monday, Lancaster County District Judge Jodi Nelson sentenced Gilliam to prison and ordered he register as a sex offender.
The allegations were first reported in Louisiana a year ago and were forwarded to the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office.
A girl who knows Gilliam said he had sexually abused her at a home near Waverly between 2012 and January 2017, investigators said in an affidavit for Gilliam's arrest.
The girl was younger than 12 when the abuse started, according to the affidavit.
