Prosecutors charged a former Nebraska State Penitentiary employee Friday with a felony, accusing her of sending an unauthorized letter to an inmate in October, according to court documents.

Aleasha Gutierrez, 27, of Lincoln, would face up to two years in prison if she's convicted of unlawful communication to a prisoner.

In an affidavit for her arrest, a Nebraska Department of Correctional Services investigator said Gutierrez began talking with the prisoner after he saw her crying at the prison one day and asked her about her personal life.

She wrote the letter to the inmate in mid-October, shortly before the inmate was paroled, the affidavit said.

Gutierrez had not been arrested as of Monday afternoon, but was wanted on a warrant.

She was hired in May as a corporal and fired by the department Oct. 23, spokeswoman Dawn-Renee Smith said.
