Each year, American Rivers, a Washington, D.C.-based river preservation group, releases a top 10 list of the most endangered rivers in the U.S.

* 1. Potomac River (Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and District of Columbia) -- pollution.

* 2. Green River (Wyoming, Utah and Colorado) -- water withdrawals.

* 3. Chattahoochee River (Georgia) -- new dams and reservoirs.

* 4. Missouri River (Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming) -- outdated flood management.

* 5. Hoback River (Wyoming) -- natural gas development.

* 6. Grand River (Ohio) -- natural gas development.

* 7. South Fork Skykomish (Washington) -- new dam.

* 8. Crystal River (Colorado) -- dams and water diversions.

* 9. Coal River (Wyoming) -- coal mining.

* 10. Kansas River (Kansas) -- sand and gravel dredging.
