This Saturday at 8:30 a.m., the beds at the Sunken Gardens will officially be tucked in for the winter.

The annuals have already faded and volunteers are asked to show up with their shovels to turn the soil.

This year's flower show at 27th and Capital Pkwy. was spectacular. The theme of "Hachi Maki," with its pink, red, white and bits of purple stood out for most of the summer. It made me smile every time I drove by the corner.

This weekend's nice weather forecast presents an opportunity to turn the soil in your own garden.

After the plants are cleaned out, amending the soil with organic materials will help improve the soil structure which helps drainage and always makes things grow better.

So take your shovel to the Sunken Gardens, then go to your own backyard and do the same thing there.
