Carol Jean (Zwick) Tapley, 75, of Lincoln, Neb., died Saturday (3/6/10), at Tabitha Hospice in Lincoln, Neb. Ms. Tapley was born December 2, 1934, in Kaukauna, Wisconsin. She attended Kaukauna High School in Kaukauna, Wisconsin. She continued her education at St. Luke's Nursing School in Chicago, Illinois, (1956) and, later, received her Baccalaureate (1978) and Master's (1980) degrees from Governors State University in University Park, Illinois. She worked as a nurse and hospital administrator in the Chicago area. In her retirement from the healthcare field she worked for Lincoln Public Schools for almost five years as a health office aide and paraeducator.
She loved her family and friends, helping others, children and animals. She was an inspiration to others and excelled at appreciating the little things in life and pursuing and attaining her many life goals, be they large or small. Her interests included continuing education, people, travel, opera, classical music, football, museums and spending time with those she loved. She was involved in community service for numerous organizations in the Chicago area before moving to Lincoln to be near family. She was a member of First Plymouth Congregational Church. Ms. Tapley received many honors in her life. Among them was receiving the Helen Boosalis Outstanding Senior Citizen Award (2002) from the former mayor herself. She was nominated by her school principal for being an outstanding senior worker.
She is survived by her daughters, Dr. Anne Tapley Gasper and husband Russ Gasper of Lincoln, and Sarah Zwick-Tapley of Ames, Iowa; her sister, Jean (Zwick) Verhagen of Kaukauna, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Emily, Emma and Janet Gasper, and Levi and Marquita Zwick-Tapley. Other dear family members include Kay White, Gary Verhagen, Jon Verhagen, Barbara, Andrew, David and Steven Wetzel, and Heather Davidson Wallig. She is also survived by her dear friend of 71 years, Nancy Cheesbrough and her husband Lee. Carol Tapley was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Richard Philip Tapley, and her parents Gertrude (Kolberg) and Benjamin Zwick, and brother-in-law Fred Verhagen.
Graveside Services 3:30 p.m. Friday at Lincoln Memorial Park. Enter at Gate 2. Memorial services 5 p.m. at Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home, 4040 A Street with reception to follow. Before her death, Ms. Tapley requested that memorials be sent to the church. No visitation.
