Dell R. Sand, 95 years of age, of Lincoln, Neb., formerly of Holdrege, peacefully passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2011, surrounded by his family after a ten year stay in Lincoln at the home of his daughter, Mary Beth Morris. Dell Roger Sand was born July 10, 1915 on the family farm in Phelps County, Nebraska, near Bertrand to Carl William and Jarda Marie (Waller) Sand. He attended country school and graduated from Bertrand High School with the class of 1933. He attended and was confirmed at the Westmark Church through his growing up and adult years. At age 12, Dell accepted Christ as his personal Savior. He served his Lord very faithfully for the rest of his life. Dell and Ruthie passed out Bibles wherever they went and spoke often about their faith.
Dell was inducted into the United States Army in July 1942 and served in the African, European and Pacific Theatres until his honorable discharge in 1945. On June 5, 1946, Dell married Ruth Inez Anderson at Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege. To this union five children were born: Dell Roger Jr., Dennis Dale, Ruth Annette, Inez Lynette, and Mary Beth. Prior to Ruthie passing away in 1999, the couple celebrated their 52nd Wedding Anniversary.
Dell farmed on the family farm for most of his life. In the spring of 1985, Dell and Ruthie retired and moved to Holdrege. They enjoyed their church activities, visiting with friends and neighbors, took several trips together and especially enjoyed the times they spent with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Besides his wife, Ruthie, Dell was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Inez Lynette; his parents; one brother, Walter Sand; one sister, Gladys Holen and her husband, Chester; and brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws: Dale Anderson and Alice and Ruthann Anderson.
Left to mourn his passing are his children: Roger Sand and his wife, Julie of Lincoln, Dennis Sand and his wife, Jennifer of Bertrand, Annette Moon of Lincoln, and Mary Beth Morris and her husband, Keith; 16 grandchildren: Jeremy Sand, Heather (Burton) Spivey, Heidi (Jonathan) Boemper, Lindsey (Justin) Schmidt, Jill Sand, Tiffany (Ryan) Hutzel, Josh (Andi) Sand, Bethany Sand, Jonathan (Mandy) Sand, Jeff (Haley) Moon, Jodi (Kevin) Stumpff, Jed (Amanda) Moon, Ross Morris, Jerod (Jessica) Morris, Charlie Morris and Natrina Morris; 21 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, and many friends.
No one was happier to go home to be with his Lord than Dell! He spoke often about how much he wanted to go and be with the Lord.
Funeral Services will be conducted from the Westmark Evangelical Free Church of rural Loomis, Neb. on Friday, May 13, 2011 at 11 a.m. with Pastors Rick Smith and Keith Morris, officiating. Interment will be in the Moses Hill Cemetery in Phelps County, Nebraska with military honors provided by the Loomis Veterans Organization in conjunction with the United States Army National Guard Military Honors Team. A memorial service will also be held at Lincoln Berean Church on Thursday, May 12, 2011 at 11 a.m. Viewing will be at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege on Thursday, May 12, 2011 from 1-8 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6-7:30 p.m. A memorial has been established in Dell's memory and will be designated at a later date.
