Melvin S. "Wimpy" Knopp, 84, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2013. Melvin was born in Lincoln on April 16, 1929, one of seven children of Conrad and Clara Knopp. He graduated from Lincoln High School and was later inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame. Melvin was married to Phyllis Waldman for 49 years and she preceded him in death on December 23, 2001. Member of Friedens Lutheran Church, American Legion Post #3, and was a Korean War Veteran. Melvin loved his family, sports, hunting and fishing. He played professional baseball for the St. Louis Browns baseball organization for three seasons before entering the U.S. Army in 1950. Before retiring, he worked at the Lincoln Journal Star and Mid America Web Press.
Survived by son, Melvin Knopp, Jr. (Maureen Lyons), Lincoln; daughter, Pat (Steve) Corder, Centennial, Colo.; sister, Carol Ann Bingham, Lincoln; brother, Robert (Georgia) Knopp, Lincoln; grandchildren, Matthew (Brittney), Stephanie, Chandler and Meredith Corder. Preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother, Lee Knopp, sisters, Deloris Greenwald, Virginia Hull and Eleanor Eirich.
Visitation: Friday, noon-9 pm, with the family 6-8 pm, at funeral home and Saturday one hour before service.
