February 19, 1948 - October 10, 2017

Karl Church Kuivinen was born February 19, 1948, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Dr. Edward J. and Rachael Kuivinen. Karl passed away peacefully at home with his wife Linda by his side on October 10, 2017, after a courageous 11-month battle with cancer. From 1968 to 2003 Karl worked to provide logistical support, glacio-climatological research, field operations management, and ice drilling services to an international cadre of scientists conducting field work in both Antarctica and the Arctic. He served 39 field seasons in the Polar Regions during his career and is the recipient of the United States of America Antarctic Service Medal (1970) and the U.S.S.R. Polar Service Medal (1988).

Following graduation from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1971, Karl served as a personnel specialist and courier with top secret clearance in the U.S. Army. During his final months of military service, Karl was assigned under 'Project Transition' to the National Science Foundation Office of Polar Programs, where he contributed to the initial Draft Impact Statement for Antarctica. In 1974, Karl began 29 years of service to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) in a variety of capacities including field operations manager for the Ross Ice Shelf Project Management Office, director of the Polar Ice Coring Office, and co-director of the Snow and Ice Research Group.

In 2005, the United States Board on Geographic Names announced the designation of an Antarctic geological feature honoring Karl and his service. Kuivinen Ridge is a transverse ridge extending SW-NE across Saint Johns Range between an unnamed glacier and Ringer Glacier in Victoria Land.

Karl is survived by his wife, Linda Russell Kuivinen; sister, Marta Kuivinen Brown of Bellevue, Washington; sister, Rachael VerDuin of Brookfield, Wisconsin; nephews, David and Matthew Brown; niece, Melinda Waite; and nephew, Dan VerDuin.

Private burial will be in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, at a later date. Memorial gifts may be made to the People's City Mission. Condolences: www.bmlfh.com.
