DeEtta Feeken, 106, Crete, was born in York County, Nebraska to Glenn and Julia Marsh Smith. She passed away October 9, 2017, in Crete. She attended schools in Lushton, Geneva, and graduated from Crete High School in 1929. In 1934, she married Alvin Feeken, and they farmed northwest of Crete. A son, Frederick Glenn, was born to this union. The family moved to Crete in 1948.
DeEtta began her career as a stenographer before graduating from high school. She continued as secretary for several area businesses and attorneys as well as the superintendent of schools and a county judge before working at Doane College as the executive assistant to President Donald Typer, President pro tem David Osterhout and President Phil Heckman.
She was an accomplished musician beginning at an early age and played the organ and piano for Plymouth UCC for 40 years and accompanied many soloists and groups. DeEtta was a perfectionist and quietly and unassumingly did whatever needed to be done with a good sense of humor and often a hearty laugh. She spent many hours doing needlework, working crossword puzzles and reading. She was a world traveler.
She was a member and held offices in the Crete Municipal Hospital Board, Crete Municipal Hospital Foundation and Friends of Crete Public Library. She was commended for her service to her community as the 2005 Service to Mankind Award recipient by the Crete Sertoma Clubs.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son; and brothers, Darrel (Bill) and Robert. She is survived by nieces, Linda Latimer and Lisa Kirk of Utah and Kathleen Moss of Lincoln.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Friends of Crete Public Library, Crete Public School Trust or Crete Hospital Foundation. A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, October 13, at Plymouth UCC, Crete, Kuncl Funeral Home in Crete is handling arrangements. Condolences may be left at kunclfh.com.
