Sen. Bob Hilkemann of Omaha announced Friday he will be a candidate for a second term in the Legislature next year.

Hilkemann, a member of the Appropriations Committee, said he "would like to continue to monitor the state's budget and the state's general fund spending to make sure resources are spent wisely."

During his first three years in the Legislature, Hilkemann said, he has supported property tax relief and he "will continue to support tax relief for all Nebraskans."

Hilkemann said he also has been a strong advocate for quality education in Nebraska's schools.

During his first term, Hilkemann introduced safety measures to improve and protect school children by adding safety belts to newly purchased school buses.

A retired podiatrist, Hilkemann represents the 4th District in west Omaha.
