Kali Nicole always has had a passion for dancing.
That’s why you can find her now on the sidelines of Omaha Nighthawks football games as a cheerleader.
“It gives me something to do while I figure things out,” she said last week in a phone interview.
Nicole left KLKN-TV Sept. 30 as its weekend anchor after her contract expired. She had worked for the Lincoln ABC affiliate for three years, anchoring weekends the last two of them.
She’s joked on Twitter that she’s now retired.
“I’m taking a break right now,” she said. “I’m really burned out. After Channel 8, I need some time to get my stuff together.”
Part of her “retirement” includes moving to Omaha, where her boyfriend Thor Tripp is a sports reporter at Omaha ABC affiliate KETV. Tripp worked at Lincoln CBS affiliate KOLN-KGIN-TV before moving to the bigger market.
“I met some really amazing people (in Lincoln) and had some great experiences,” said Nicole, who grew up in Montana and graduated from Texas A&M University. She interned at stations in Montana and Texas before coming to KLKN as an intern.
She said she may pursue another TV job or maybe something in public relations.
“I went into this like every young reporter who lived for breaking news and politics,” she said. “But I came out of it thinking I don’t want to do breaking news or politics ever again. I only want to do features. That’s where my heart is. Everybody has a story to tell. I enjoy finding those people.”

Gray comes to NRG Media after three years with Clear Channel Communications where she worked at Omaha stations KAT 103 (KXKT 103.7 FM) and The Wolf (KTWI 93.3 FM). She also produced Crash Davis’ afternoon show on KFAB (1110 AM).
