Somehow it's still not a Summer Olympics event, but this Friday you can take part in a watermelon seed-spitting contest at Tower Square, 1300 O St., that serves as both a fundraiser and a kickoff to a late summer concert series.
The event, Spit Seeds for Proceeds, is billed as the official kickoff to Hear Lincoln, a concert series that will take place at Tower Square on Fridays from 5 to 7 p.m. through August and September. From 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, participants can sign up to see how their pitooey measures up against the best of Lincoln, and the world. (The record, according to a Texas Monthly how-to on spitting watermelon seeds, is just shy of 69 feet.)
There's a suggested donation of $5, and there will be plenty of watermelon on hand during the event. Proceeds from the donations go to Nebraska nonprofits the BAY and Hear Nebraska. Jack Hotel and Risky Clique will be playing.
