Hy-Vee is putting the finishing touches on its new Plattsmouth store opening Dec. 3, its 25th in Nebraska.
“The store is a new concept for Hy-Vee,” said Plattsmouth manager Mike Basch. “It's 55,000 square feet but has all the services and departments of a 90,000-square-foot store. The aisles are just as wide, but the coolers are smaller.”
Although the Hy-Vee store will mirror others in the Midwest, it will be the first in Nebraska to have a full-service restaurant, the Market Café, with servers, table service and a bar with four beers on tap, bottled beer and wine.
“We're bringing a new dining experience to Hy-Vee,” said Basch, who has been with Hy-Vee for 23 years. “Before it's over, Hy-Vee will have a Market Café in every store.” Hy-Vee has gotten national news media attention for its opening full-service restaurants in stores this year. One is planned for the North 27th Street Hy-Vee in Lincoln, which is being remodeled.
The restaurant in Plattsmouth will seat 120 people. There are 11 big-screen TVs around the entire dining area, said Brooke Barnes, restaurant development director.
From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday, the café will have a brunch buffet.
In addition to the restaurant, Basch said Hy-Vee is bringing a one-stop shopping venue to Plattsmouth, with separate meat, seafood, dairy, frozen food, bakery, health market, floral, staple goods and imported cheese departments as well as an expanded wine and spirits section, dry cleaning, Western Union service and money orders.
The Plattsmouth Hy-Vee building also is LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified. As a LEED-certified structure, the Hy-Vee uses LED lights, on-demand water heaters, energy-efficient heating and air-conditioning units, and air-quality systems.
More than 400 employees have been hired at the location. Eighty-seven positions are full-time and the rest are part-time. “We are very flexible with our part-time hours,” Basch said. “We try to get kids who are involved in sports, choir and other school activities.”
Plattsmouth Hy-Vee is inviting the public to its parking lot from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday. “We've teamed with the fire department and Teammates," Basch said. "Santa will arrive on a firetruck at 3:30 p.m. We'll give away cookies, apple cider and coffee.”
The store officially will open at 6 a.m. Dec. 3. It will be open 24 hours per day. The store closes at 4 p.m. Christmas Eve and does not reopen until 6 a.m. Dec. 26, to allow employees to spend the holiday with their families.
Plattsmouth Hy-Vee is at 16418 Westside Drive in Plattsmouth, just off U.S. 75.
Hy-Vee has one of its larger stores, 87,617 square feet, being built in Kearney, one of 239 in the nation by the time it is finished, and the chain's westernmost location.
