Gov. Ricketts announced Wednesday that his trade mission to Japan has resulted in a deal for the Smithfield Foods plant in Crete.
Ricketts said in a news release that Sagami Chain Co. Ltd. signed a letter of intent to expand its business relationship with Smithfield, which will result in the sourcing of pork products by Sagami from Smithfield’s processing plant in Crete.
The Sagami Chain has more than 170 restaurants located across Japan that specialize in deep-fried pork cutlets. Last year, the company's CEO toured the Smithfield plant in Crete, which state officials said was key in leading to the agreement.
Ricketts and other state officials are in Japan this week on a trade mission to pitch agriculture and other industries to Japanese officials.
