CHI Health St. Elizabeth has filed a lawsuit against a doctor and his former practice alleging he broke a contract when he left and failed to repay the hospital more than $183,000 in loans used to recruit him.

Dr. J. Reggie Thomas agreed with the hospital in 2012 to relocate to Lincoln and maintain a full-time practice with Consultants in Gastroenterology P.C., according to the lawsuit.

In exchange, the hospital agreed to loan Thomas money to pay for his relocation, as well as give him a signing bonus and guarantee his income for the first two years, the lawsuit said.

Thomas started his practice in September 2013.

The specialist left Consultants in Gastroenterology on Oct. 1, 2015, and has since failed to repay the money he earned beyond his guaranteed income amount, as he had agreed to do, according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit, filed in Lancaster County District Court, asks for repayment of the loans plus interest.

Thomas is listed as a physician working for Gastroenterology Specialties and has admitting privileges at Bryan Health hospitals, according to their websites.
