Mom of mall shooter says she’s responsible
By TIMBERLY ROSS/ The Associated Press
OMAHA — The mother of Robert Hawkins, the 19-year-old who shot and killed eight people and himself at an Omaha shopping mall, says she bears responsibility for his troubled life and how he chose to end it.
In the episode of the syndicated talk show “Dr. Phil’’ that is airing Wednesday, Maribel “Molly’’ Rodriguez says Hawkins “was supposed to have been something other than a mass murderer.’’
Her son entered Westroads Mall’s Von Maur department store on Dec. 5, 2007, armed with an assault weapon that he’d taken from his stepfather’s closet. He fatally shot six store employees and two customers and wounded several others before turning the gun on himself.

Host Phil McGraw called it “a mother’s worst nightmare,’’ but said there were several warning signs leading up to the killing spree. He questioned Rodriguez about how Hawkins obtained the gun and why she didn’t act on the warning signs.
Rodriguez has said she sensed something was wrong upon returning from a brief outing to her ex-husband’s house, where she and Hawkins had eaten supper earlier the night of Dec. 4.
The stepfather was vacationing in Thailand at the time.
On Wednesday’s show, McGraw said Rodriguez was concerned enough to check whether a gun was missing from the home, but she didn’t try to confront her son until the next day. Hawkins didn’t answer her call to his cell phone.
“I made that conscious decision to ignore everything that was telling me to go and search Robert’s Jeep,’’ Rodriguez said.
McGraw also questioned Debora Maruca-Kovac, who had taken Hawkins into her home. She said she saw the gun the night before the shooting.
“I saw the gun,’’ Maruca-Kovac said. “I didn’t know what it was. Unfortunately, I’ve been desensitized to guns. All the toy guns look like real guns.’’
Jeff Schaffart, an Omaha attorney who was shot in an arm and finger, also appeared on Wednesday’s show, saying the mall tragedy could have been prevented.
“It’s clear that the Von Maur killer had a history of psychotic episodes and psychiatric problems, and yet they have this extremely dangerous military weapon just sitting in a closet unlocked in a house that this killer was allowed access to,’’ Schaffart said. “I think that’s inexcusable and beyond the pale.’’
During part of the episode, Schaffart refused to be on set with Rodriguez, but he later relented.
Rodriguez said Hawkins was 2 1/2 when she divorced his father, and that she had no contact with her son between the ages of 6 and 17.
She said her son was molested for the first three years of his life and was first put in a mental hospital at 3 1/2.
Later, Hawkins was a troubled teenager who spent four years in a series of treatment centers, group homes and foster care after threatening to kill his stepmother in 2002. He had broken up with a girlfriend and lost his job at a McDonald’s in the days before the shooting.
Gunned down were Beverly Flynn, Gary Joy, Janet Jorgensen, John McDonald, Gary Scharf, Angie Schuster, Dianne Trent and Maggie Webb.
Police found no connection between Hawkins and his targets, only a suicide note.

The whole family was obviously messed up. Hawkins didn't stand a chance. Our mental health care in this state is messed up. It was a recipe for disaster, and unfortunately there are a lot of innocent people dealing with the aftermath of all these screw-ups. It is not necessary to keep re-hashing it over and over and over again.
Let's start fixing some of these problems that led to the Von Maur shooting instead of endlessly talking about it. "
You can talk all you want about preventing things from happening, but when you are the mother that is in that situation, trust me there are not many places that you can reach out to and get help. "
His 'mother' needs to get off the news because it does not change anything, if anything she's making it worse "
I am glad that they showed her, because I was curious about what this kid's parents were like. It seems obvious to me that bad parents were a contributing factor here, and it wasn't just some 'kid gone bad' and they 'did everything to help him'. "
I don't think she was the proximate cause of the murders, but she definitely is not going to win any parenting awards....
My heart goes out to a little 3 year old boy, treated despicably, abandoned by a nut case unprotective mother, at a very tender age, thrown into a psych facility with no Mother by his side at all times.
Don't talk about mental health services for kids...the recipe is right here in this article, how does any therapist make up for all that cruel abuse and neglect?
More mental health services isn't going to erase the pain that this child went through.
Too bad his mom doesn't shop at Von Maur... That is a terrible thing to say, but I can't in my wild imaginings begin to understand what is supposed to be a "human being" throwing her baby boy away like that. Did she know what the word "adoption" meant?
Then we blame video games???? My son played them forever growing up and they sparked his imagination so much that he became a physics major and is now in grad school.
The hand that rocks the cradle....
There is just nothing so precious as a little boy. Was he ever free of horrible thoughts and able to be a carefree child who would watch batman, and eat cookies and have no other worries? I doubt it. "
"It is sad that there are many people like this out there, yet we keep making video games that shoot people and kill people and allow you to do all the violent unethical crimes on a game. There are those that will take these to reality again some day. Hope I am not near by.

I was wondering how long it would take before someone brought up video games. I am 26 and have been playing games all my life and many so called violent games throughout that entire time. I'm sorry but I have no urge to go take a gun out and harm anyone. The violent video game theory is going nowhere fast. People need to start learning to be a good parent and teach kids basic morals and the difference between right and wrong. "
And don't blame the mental health professionals! They are doing all that they can to help the people that need it. More often than not, youths with behavioral issues have had some type of trauma in the past that leads to mental instability. And that may or may not be because of something done by the parents. But behavioral disorders are commonly caused by childhood trauma.
So I'll leave you with this thought: The lifestyle a person has as a child will shape their future as an adult.
Think about it. "
