OMAHA — The mother of Robert Hawkins, the 19-year-old who shot and killed eight people and himself at an Omaha shopping mall, says she bears responsibility for his troubled life and how he chose to end it.

In the episode of the syndicated talk show “Dr. Phil’’ that is airing Wednesday, Maribel “Molly’’ Rodriguez says Hawkins “was supposed to have been something other than a mass murderer.’’

Her son entered Westroads Mall’s Von Maur department store on Dec. 5, 2007, armed with an assault weapon that he’d taken from his stepfather’s closet. He fatally shot six store employees and two customers and wounded several others before turning the gun on himself.

Host Phil McGraw called it “a mother’s worst nightmare,’’ but said there were several warning signs leading up to the killing spree. He questioned Rodriguez about how Hawkins obtained the gun and why she didn’t act on the warning signs.

Rodriguez has said she sensed something was wrong upon returning from a brief outing to her ex-husband’s house, where she and Hawkins had eaten supper earlier the night of Dec. 4.

The stepfather was vacationing in Thailand at the time.

On Wednesday’s show, McGraw said Rodriguez was concerned enough to check whether a gun was missing from the home, but she didn’t try to confront her son until the next day. Hawkins didn’t answer her call to his cell phone.

“I made that conscious decision to ignore everything that was telling me to go and search Robert’s Jeep,’’ Rodriguez said.

McGraw also questioned Debora Maruca-Kovac, who had taken Hawkins into her home. She said she saw the gun the night before the shooting.

“I saw the gun,’’ Maruca-Kovac said. “I didn’t know what it was. Unfortunately, I’ve been desensitized to guns. All the toy guns look like real guns.’’

Jeff Schaffart, an Omaha attorney who was shot in an arm and finger, also appeared on Wednesday’s show, saying the mall tragedy could have been prevented.

“It’s clear that the Von Maur killer had a history of psychotic episodes and psychiatric problems, and yet they have this extremely dangerous military weapon just sitting in a closet unlocked in a house that this killer was allowed access to,’’ Schaffart said. “I think that’s inexcusable and beyond the pale.’’

During part of the episode, Schaffart refused to be on set with Rodriguez, but he later relented.

Rodriguez said Hawkins was 2 1/2 when she divorced his father, and that she had no contact with her son between the ages of 6 and 17.

She said her son was molested for the first three years of his life and was first put in a mental hospital at 3 1/2.

Later, Hawkins was a troubled teenager who spent four years in a series of treatment centers, group homes and foster care after threatening to kill his stepmother in 2002. He had broken up with a girlfriend and lost his job at a McDonald’s in the days before the shooting.

Gunned down were Beverly Flynn, Gary Joy, Janet Jorgensen, John McDonald, Gary Scharf, Angie Schuster, Dianne Trent and Maggie Webb.

Police found no connection between Hawkins and his targets, only a suicide note.

" Oh, enough with the stories about Robert Hawkins and the Von Maur shooting! The young man wanted to go out in a blaze of glory and with every newspaper inch and minute of TV time you devote to him, you give him exactly what he wanted and glorify what he did. From what I've read, he's not worth it.

The whole family was obviously messed up. Hawkins didn't stand a chance. Our mental health care in this state is messed up. It was a recipe for disaster, and unfortunately there are a lot of innocent people dealing with the aftermath of all these screw-ups. It is not necessary to keep re-hashing it over and over and over again.

Let's start fixing some of these problems that led to the Von Maur shooting instead of endlessly talking about it. "

" Kudos to a mother that steps up and takes responsibility. Most parents try to blame television, music, the government or anybody else they can for their child's failings. Or they throw out the old standard, "It couldn't be MY kid that is doing something wrong!" God forbid they actually take responsibility. Too bad she had to do it on the hack-and-quack media circus that is Dr. Phil. "

" I can some what understand the mom. My own child made homicidal threats to me when she was having issues with her Bipolar disorder. I had to hide and lock up all the knives in the house. I was glad we never had a gun, I would likely not be here today. I also did not sleep very well for years,no one can know how it feels to wonder if the noise you hear is your child coming to full fill her death thoughts about you. We no longer live in the same house she is 21 now and I dont think I could ever stay in the same home with her. It is sad that there are many people like this out there, yet we keep making video games that shoot people and kill people and allow you to do all the violent unethical crimes on a game. There are those that will take these to reality again some day. Hope I am not near by.
You can talk all you want about preventing things from happening, but when you are the mother that is in that situation, trust me there are not many places that you can reach out to and get help. "

" I do not think it is appropriate for someone else to place the blame on their self. Regardless of 'sensing' something is wrong, and noticing a gun was missing, how were they to know what the outcome would be the next day? Lots of people have guns in their homes...how are we ever to know what one will do with a gun if they are allowed access? The fact remains - this horrible tragedy has already occurred, and we can not turn back time. Let's not go placing the blame on others when we already know who was responsible. "

He is getting a lot of media attention for these horrendous crimes, and his mother appearing on national television is just the icing on the cake. If she keeps the money that she received for appearing on Dr. Phil, then she is profiting from the deaths of those eight victims! That is disgusting! "

We tried to get help at hospitals and in a wide variety of ways but never had much luck finding someone that was really trained to deal with the complexity of this and other disorders. There is a shortage of qualified mental health specialists in this area. In addition, the person with the illness has to be willing to get help and follow the Dr.'s orders. If they are unwilling to get treatment then there isn't much anyone can do. I feel for this family and the families that were hurt by the boys violent rampage. The only way to prevent it from happening is to make more / better help available for those who want it. "

She just seems to know more then she is letting out and she seems to be 100% responsible. This story is misleading because she couldn't give Dr. Phil straight answers, or the answers she did give was complete babble. I think the rest of her children should be taken away from her and her ex husband for the children's safety. These two are not fit to be parents. What kind of a mother smokes pot with her son? What kind of a mother lets her "unstable" son be around that kind of environment. She knew..and she knows that and it will eat her for the rest of her life... "

SHE SMOKED POT WITH THE KID ON THANKSGIVING, and then she RATIONALIZES that she was somehow HELPING him, or blames the family that her kid was staying with!
I am glad that they showed her, because I was curious about what this kid's parents were like. It seems obvious to me that bad parents were a contributing factor here, and it wasn't just some 'kid gone bad' and they 'did everything to help him'. "

" Did not see the show as I work but don't care for Dr. Phil anyway so I can't comment on the way the show was portrayed. But the young man had problems since an early age. I can't say if it was the mother's soul fault. But this is clearly another fall through the system kid. You can't blame the kid either as he was blantly distrubed. There was psychological problems that even a layman can see. Granted the end result was brutal and most feel the acts unforgiveable which is understandable-lives were taken--innocent lives. All I see is distrust from the system, hurt from all sides, lack of assistance, a troubled youth that took the wrong road out. BUT what it has done is again sealed the problems with youth and how the system fails. If he had taken his own life alone, would this be an issue? Then, would your comments be different? But honestly, if I received payment for being on the show I would donate it to the victim fund or some type of program to help youth. "

" WHAT MOTHER IN THE WORLD COULD GO ALL THOSE YEARS WITHOUT SEEING HER SON? SHE SAW HIM UNTIL HE WAS 2 1/2? SHE ABANDONED A BABY!!! UNDER HER CARE HE WAS MOLESTED AND PUT IN A PSYCHIATRIC FACILITY AT AGE 3!!!
I don't think she was the proximate cause of the murders, but she definitely is not going to win any parenting awards....

My heart goes out to a little 3 year old boy, treated despicably, abandoned by a nut case unprotective mother, at a very tender age, thrown into a psych facility with no Mother by his side at all times.

Don't talk about mental health services for kids...the recipe is right here in this article, how does any therapist make up for all that cruel abuse and neglect?
More mental health services isn't going to erase the pain that this child went through.
Too bad his mom doesn't shop at Von Maur... That is a terrible thing to say, but I can't in my wild imaginings begin to understand what is supposed to be a "human being" throwing her baby boy away like that. Did she know what the word "adoption" meant?
Then we blame video games???? My son played them forever growing up and they sparked his imagination so much that he became a physics major and is now in grad school.
The hand that rocks the cradle....

There is just nothing so precious as a little boy. Was he ever free of horrible thoughts and able to be a carefree child who would watch batman, and eat cookies and have no other worries? I doubt it. "

Whether it would have been able to prevent this particular crime will never be known. But I bet quality mental health services in the state of Nebraska would prevent a few violent crimes whether it is homicide, suicide, sexual assault...and isn't it worth it? I bet the victims families think it would be. "

That was what she was on the Dr.Phil show for correct? I think parents really need to think of how everyday actions will affect their kids in the future. There are parenting classes, books, and help everywhere. People should really take a good look at themselves before they have children and maybe consider not having any children if they are unfit themselves. I trully feel so sorry for all the children born to these idiots. "

I was wondering how long it would take before someone brought up video games. I am 26 and have been playing games all my life and many so called violent games throughout that entire time. I'm sorry but I have no urge to go take a gun out and harm anyone. The violent video game theory is going nowhere fast. People need to start learning to be a good parent and teach kids basic morals and the difference between right and wrong. "

" It's time to stop blaming everyone and everything for what happened. It's not the mom's fault. Any parent would know that you can not constantly watch your kids or know what they're doing or thinking. Teenagers do NOT want to confide in their parents. Especially troubled youth.

And don't blame the mental health professionals! They are doing all that they can to help the people that need it. More often than not, youths with behavioral issues have had some type of trauma in the past that leads to mental instability. And that may or may not be because of something done by the parents. But behavioral disorders are commonly caused by childhood trauma.

So I'll leave you with this thought: The lifestyle a person has as a child will shape their future as an adult.

Think about it. "
