" Lets give the the teams in 8 man D-1 a round of applause. To the Johnson Brock Eagle I say job well done. This is a team that all have said was not worth ranking and they are now District Champions beating a team ranked #2 in offense. The Coahes did a great job and the players never gave up and played as a team. Go Eagles now to round 1 of playoffs. "

In Class A I bet #14 seed Papio knocks off easy schedule Lincoln North Star. "

" Redistricting is needed in class A. When teams that are 2-7 and 3-6 can make the playoffs, something needs to be fixed. North Platte finished 5-4 and is done for the year because they had a 2-3 record in their district and Fremont made it because they finished 3-2 in district. That is ridiculous. "

" To Brian, Guido, and football fan:
Teams with records below .500 have made the Class A playoffs every year since the NSAA expanded the playoff field from 8 to 16 teams years ago.
That fact is likely to stay the same until the format is changed. "

HS AD wrote on October 25, 2008 5:04 pm:
" Clarification -- The NSAA did not expand the number of schools that qualified for the playoffs. That was a proposal introduced by schools that was voted on and passed by the entire NSAA school membership. Personally, I think Classes C1 thru D2 have too many teams qualifying. 16 is enough, 32 is too many. "

To HS AD wrote on October 25, 2008 6:37 pm:
" Does the NSAA not sanction the playoffs for high school football in the state of Nebraska? The playoff format for football in Class A was once like it was for basketball; 6 district champions and 2 wild card winners.
Thank or blame the NSAA...not the schools. "

" Why is Hartington Cedar Catholic in the west Bracket of the C-2 playoffs? How does that work out being they are clear up in the Northeast part of the State and they play Sutherland thats clear out in the Southwest part of the state. I dont understand! "

HS AD wrote on October 25, 2008 10:53 pm:
" Understand the legislative process the NSAA uses. Any school can write a proposal for a change and submit to their district meeting. There are 6 districts statewide. The changes only come if other schools approve the proposals. That is why the playoff plans are different for the various classes -- all started with a proposal from a school that made it throught the legislative process. The NSAA staff is then responsible to carry out the proposal. They only carry out what has been enacted by the schools or Board of Control. "

Class A Coach wrote on October 26, 2008 8:03 pm:
" Too many teams make the playoffs in class A. It should be lowered back to eight teams, or the class should be bigger. Add Pius, Ralston, Sioux City and Columbus. Also, points should be the only factor getting teams in, that would get rid of 2-7 and 3-6 teams. "

" The seeds are determined by the teams' power rankings. For instance, in Class B, although Pius lost to Beatrice, someone decided that they played a tougher schedule which means they come out on top. Don't get me wrong, I don't know who determines the power points, but that's how it works for now. Until someone else comes up with a better way, that's the way we do business. "

" class b needs to move crete and beatrice to the west and columbus and schyler to the east. its high time mccook's free ride come to an end. they play no competition all year until the finals. let them play a few good teams from the east and they wouldnt make the final every year. "

soccermom wrote on October 28, 2008 11:52 am:
" The seeding/points is determined by the difficulty of schedule. Check the nsaahome.org page to understand better. If you look at Pius, Beatrice and Waverly's schedules you will note that Pius won against more teams with winning records the nsaa translates this to more points by assuming that those schools with winning schedules must be better teams than those with loosing records. For example of Waverly's 9 games you can see that 4 were wins against teams with loosing records 3 were againts teams with 5-4 records making there only significant win against Beatrice. Compared to Pius' having two significant wins over Waverly and Gross (both having 8-1) records and 4 wins over schools with 5-4 records. So schedule does matter. It doesn't always seem right but there has to be some somewhat objective way to determine seeds. nsaa uses the same points method for all sports. "

Why not congratulate teams that had subpar seasons but did what was necessary to make the playoffs? Omaha Northwest hasn't made the playoffs in 20 years...be happy for that school and that team...isn't that what sports and competition is about?

As for DEF and the gators easy schedule it seems to me that 5 of the 9 teams that they played are all in the playoffs and they only lost to one of those teams. The schools don't determine their schedules so don't hate on a team that has a great season. Good luck Gators! "

Other teams had a lot better schedules and didn't make playoffs, 2 and 7 doesn't make sense for a playoff spot. Sorry if anyone thinks I'm hating on NW or Fremont but when I told my friends from Fremont that their team made playoffs they laughed. "

" Class A is a joke. When two-thirds of the schools "qualify" for the state playoffs, something is wrong. It's entirely possible for a team to win a state title with a losing record. Millard North almost did it a few years ago...qualified at 3-6, pulled off some upsets and finished state runner-up with a 6-7 record. Pathetic. The NSAA needs to recognize this problem and limit Class A to eight state qualifiers in football. "

do some research wrote on November 7, 2008 12:06 am:
" If you go to www.nsaahome.org, you can read all about why things are the way they are. It's really not that complicated??

The NSAA has absolutely NO say in how the playoffs are run, how many teams make it to the playoffs, how the east/west is split, who travels in the first round, or any of the other complaints that are being posted.

If you don't like it, go talk to your Athletic Director. From there, they can lobby to the other Directors within their district, and it goes up the chain from there.

The NSAA does NOT make the rules...they enforce them. It is exactly the same as a police officer as his duties relate to the laws. A police officer is responsible for upholding laws, NOT making the laws??

The NSAA website is very informative. There are no secrets...all of the rules that they enforce are right there for all to read. "

" Its not the poor quality teams fault that they make it to state with a pathetic record... its how the system is designed. Its clear for the majority of us that its a joke making it to state with twice as many losses as wins. Somebody passionate about the mediocrity of the Class A teams in the playoffs needs to take some initiative and get it changed. I'm too busy coaching other sports with legitimate play off systems. "

" who cares about who makes the playoffs in class a?
it all depends on who you beat in your district, and if you win those games when it comes crunch time like that, (example, fremont beating north platte in their last regular season game) then you truly deserve to be among the best. even if you don't stack up statistics or talent wise, any team that has heart can make the playoffs. "

bleacher bum wrote on November 16, 2008 2:54 pm:
" The playoff system is a bust, let's face it. When you have the NSAA setting the schedules. One 4-4 D-2 team made the playoffs only because it played 4 D-1 teams and earned a full 1 point on its wildcard average because of it (8 total bonus points + 8 games = 1 full point). A 5-3 team that played one D-1 team (.25 wildcard point) would have made the playoffs had it received an extra wildcard point. Do the math if you don't believe me. I could give more examples of the playoff system woes, but it's the system we have, it favors the teams that make the playoffs, so the ADs of those schools aren't going to vote to change the system. " Personally I think the higher seed should always be the home team. Currently it is decided by who was at home the previous game. If one team had a home game and the other was on the road then the team that was on the road gets a home game the next round. If both teams were on the road or both were at home then the higher seed gets the home game. "

Crete and Beatrice are farther east than Schuyler. The same for Hartington. There must have been at least 16 other teams farther east than Hartington for them to end up going west. "
