A South Street coffee spot has become Lincoln’s newest video store.

Cultiva Coffee Roasting Co., 1501 South St., has bought 3,600 DVDs from Spindle Records, 122 N. 14th St., a collection that includes predominantly independent, foreign and Criterion Collection films.

So now you can sip drip coffee and buy whole beans while looking for a Juliette Binoche film.

Movie rentals are $1.49 each, and if you buy a pound of coffee, you get a free rental. The shop also will buy and sell DVDs.

Plus, Cultiva owner Jon Ferguson said, if you had any late fees at Spindle Records, don’t fret. All previous late fees have been erased. And Ferguson is offering a unique approach to new late fees. Even if your movies are a week or two late, you’ll get a chance to explain yourself.

“You can write a letter of forgiveness and not have to pay your late fees,” he said. “Write me a proposal as to why it’s late, and I’ll forgive you. It has to be a good reason, though. Or at least an entertaining one.”

Because two other nearby video stores offer adult films, Ferguson wants to emphasize that this is not another porn shop.

“Foreign,” he said. “Not porn.”

In addition to offering video rentals, Cultiva has extended its hours. It’s open from 8 a.m. to noon and 4-9 p.m. Monday through Friday; 4-9 p.m. Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday.

" Great idea - good luck. I didn't know you sold bulk coffee. (Sorry, don't get out much LOL) I'll definitely come by and check the place out. Support small, local businesses! "
