Silver Hawks shuffle lineup against LSE
BY KEN HAMBLETON / Lincoln Journal Star
Lincoln Southwest had to plug in a couple of tackles and a running back or two, but the result was a constant barrage in a 28-0 victory against Lincoln Southeast on Friday night before 4,368 fans at Seacrest Field.
Two sets of crutches were handed out on the Southwest sideline, but the Silver Hawks found offensive tackles Andy Day for Andy Essman, then Matt Robertson for Day to help the line keep a steady beat.
Southwest senior fullback Eric Hyde and tailback Jeff Seybold provided plenty of spark after Southwest’s Kyle Daniel went out following his only run of the game.

“We’re banged up but we really played hard and everybody who came in tonight really played their best,” said Southwest senior tackle Drew Jagadich. “We’ve got a lot of depth and everybody here is ready to play any time.
“We all want a part of our success.”
Southeast stymied the Silver Hawks in the first quarter. Southwest missed a field goal and, on the next possession, lost a fumble at the Southwest 26-yard line.
But Ben Samani recovered a Southeast fumble on the first play after the Southwest turnover and Seybold, who rushed for 139 yards, scored the first of his two touchdowns on a 27-yard cutback run.
Southeast stalled on downs and Southwest zipped 52 yards in seven plays to set up a 5-yard touchdown run by Seybold.
The Knights seemed to have Southwest pinned after a punt and a penalty gave the Silver Hawks the ball at their 13 with 1:27 left in the first half.
“We thought 14-0 was all right and we felt we had played well to that point except for one mistake that cost a touchdown,” said Southwest coach Mark King. “So we called a couple of plays, that if they go a little way, we might try a field goal or might even try to score a touchdown. And then, Eric Hyde got us one of those plays and we decided to keep pushing.”
Hyde broke loose on a 35-yard run. Southwest quarter Rylan Cotton, who hit 9 of 11 passes for 137 yards, hit Jordan Tyrance on a 29-yard pass. Seybold ran for 5 and Cotton tossed a pass to the corner of the end zone for Ethan Tompkins for a touchdown and a 21-0 halftime lead.
Cotton tacked on a 5-yard touchdown run at the end of the third quarter to cap an 11-play, 75-yard drive.
“I felt we’ve become more consistent the last couple of weeks,” King said. “Southeast gives you a lot of different things to prepare for. Actually, I felt kind of uneasy about this game because they make you prepare for so much. Our kids really responded.”
The Silver Hawks also responded well to the injuries that forced some shifting in the lineup. “So many kids, like Eric Hyde, just want that opportunity to give it all they’ve got. I think everyone who stepped in for us tonight did a great job.”
