Kearney answered Lincoln East’s only touchdown of the game with a 70-yard romp by quarterback Jordan Moncrief on the ensuing play, and the Bearcats went on to post a 44-7 win on Friday at UNK’s Foster Field.

Moncrief, a 180-pound senior, ran 10 times for 115 yards and passed for another 123 yards and a touchdown.

Kearney, looking to bounce back after last week’s last-second loss to Lincoln Southwest, broke a scoreless tie with two touchdowns 30 seconds apart late in the first quarter.

After Moncrief hit Zach Albrecht for a 6-yard TD, the Bearcats took advantage of an interception deep in East territory to score on a 17-yard scamper by Vinny Molina.

The score stayed 14-0 until late in the second quarter, when Kearney — after converting on third-and-20 — scored on Moncrief’s 1-yard run with 22 seconds left in the first half.

East (1-5, 0-2) dominated for most of the third quarter, pulling within 21-7 on a TD pass from Scott Sunderman to Tyson Clark with 3:15 to play in the period.

But Moncrief’s long run thwarted any momentum the Spartans had mustered. Kearney (4-2, 1-1) took advantage of two turnovers in the fourth quarter to build upon its lead.
