A Sterling man was in fair condition Friday night following a car-semi accident in Gage County that morning, according to the Gage County Sheriff’s Office.

Delmar Eilers, 69, was driving west on Nebraska 41 in a 1996 Mercury sedan when he slowed down to turn onto the 34C spur and head south into Adams.

As he turned, Eilers was struck on the driver’s side by a 2000 Freightliner semi drive by William A. Beggs, 48, of Guilford, Mo. Beggs was also driving west on 41, according to a sheriff’s office press release.

Beggs told authorities that he tried to stop when he saw Eiler’s brake lights, but he could not stop in time. He said he crossed into the eastbound lane in an attempt to go around Eiler’s car.

Eilers had to be extricated from his car, and he was taken by ambulance to BryanLGH Medical Center West for injuries sustained during the accident. Beggs was unharmed.

" Hey does anyone else think the semis drive too fast to stop in time??? Yeah, I'll just bet MR Eilers does!! I see them driving through town in those death machines actually talking on cell phones?? Its out of control! "

" I've driven afew miles and seen a number of bad drivers that are usually driving cars. truckers as a group are safe and responsible. but one group of truckers that i have witnesed that are always in a hurryis rock haulers. I do'nt know what this guy was haulin but i'd bet rock. Its just plain stupid not being able to stop. Delmar was lucky. "

" In response to madd-those so called death machines give YOU life from the food you stuff in your mouth to the clothes on your back,to the gas in your car, to the paper in your office,to the computer on your desk,to the cell phone in your hand, and finally to the news paper you just made your ignorant comment in and this is just the start. The driver may be at falt, but not the truck.Show me anyone who's lively hood isnt made one war or another.(Like food comes from a grocery store, not a farm). "

" Yes, the semi driver was at fault in this scenario. You think they are the only ones who talk on cell phones while driving or drive too fast? You might want to drive in and around Lincoln for a day. There you will find all levels of stupidity in driving. Running red lights, speeding, yacking on the cell phone, pulling out in front of people, etc. Do a little research and you will find that in the majority of accidents involving semis it is NOT the semi that is at fault. These rigs are "death machines" only because drives in cars and SUV's expect them to stop on a dime and dont pay attention. "

" It is ridicilus to always be like that. Yeah some guy got hurt and leave it to someone to say he was going to fast. A semi truck is not a death machine. I do agree that talking on a cell phone sound not happen, but how many times have you MADD talked on your phone while driving. Take all the "death machines" off the road and see how bad the economy would suck then. "

" I agree. Have you traveled the interstate lately? It seems that most truckers think the speed limit is anything over 75 mph. I also live in a small towm with a highway going through and even though the speed limit is 45 most if any rarely slow down. Seems the rule of thumb is get out of our way or you will pay the price. "

" O.K. madd didn't you notice the the article said Mr. Eilers slowed down to turn.... it said nothing about him stopping at the stop sign! A person has a hard time stopping a semi when someone pulls out in front of them. "

" This is the second semi-car crash on Highway 41 in the past few weeks. First, we had a young man killed by a semi-truck when he failed to yield to a stop sign. Sure, he should have yielded, but if he'd been hit by a car, I bet he'd still be alive. I live in Adams, and I can tell you flat-out that the semis do not slow down when ppl turn onto the spur to go into Adams, no matter how far ahead you turn on your blinker! They use Highway 41 because it does not have a weigh-station instead of using Highway 2 which is better-designed to handle semi traffic. We need a weigh station on Highway 41 to keep the truckers off of it! "

" I feel bad for the guy that got injured and hope he is ok. I dont think semis drive as fast as they used to, especially with the high fuel costs. I drive 18 miles to work and drive the speed limit which in kansas is 70 MPH and I pass quite a few semis on US 81 that are only traveling aroun 65 MPH. I have rode with a friend in a semi several times and have seen cars pull out in front of him and no, they cant stop like cars. Just remember MADD that if there were no semis on the road there would be alot of things that would not be available to you, such as food to feed you and your family to the computer that you commented to this article on......how do you think Wal-Mart, Target or your favorite shopping center gets the items they put on their shelves?? "

" Hey, observant maybe you should be more observant and read the article.
They were both headed West on Hwy 41, how would Eilers stopping at a stop sign have helped him? "
