Record review: Jenny Lewis, "Acid Tongue"
By MICAH MERTES / GZO
3½ stars
Lewis, the lead singer of rock band Rilo Kiley, packs her second solo disc full of songs sweet, sincere and smarty-pants.
This album should come as some relief to old school Rilo Kiley fans. “Acid Tongue” doesn’t boast any of the overpolish of the band’s 2007 effort, “Under the Blacklight,” instead opting for the simpler, more organic sound of the band’s earlier stuff. Lewis got some help from Elvis Costello and M. Ward, which might have helped keep things tasteful.
The love song “Trying My Best” and the achingly poignant title track are as good as anything Lewis has ever written.
Did you know? Jenny Lewis was a child-actress before she went chanteuse. You might remember her as Fred Savage’s love interest in the ’80s-tastic video game movie, “The Wizard.”
