IIn a couple of months, the city should know whether it would be financially feasible for a private sports marketing company to pursue the possibility of building a new arena for Lincoln.

If such an agreement were made, local taxpayers could be off the hook for roughly $160 million of the estimated $250 million cost of the proposed arena project.

With a private company financing the arena portion, the public price could drop to $90 million or less.

The city’s plans would still call for new parking garages, surface parking, railroad realignment and new offices, restaurants and stores west of the Haymarket District.

A privately financed arena has been talked about in recent months by the city and a company called IMG College and its affiliate, International Stadia Group.

Three representatives of the companies were in Lincoln about a week ago to talk to city officials about their foray into privately financed arenas in the U.S. International Stadia Group is studying the viability of the concept in Lincoln, and expects to have a decision on whether to proceed in about two months.

An arena steering committee was briefed on the proposal Tuesday.

Most arenas are publicly financed, but IMG helped develop the marketing and financing model used to build London’s new Wembley Stadium and is pursuing privately financed stadiums in Brazil and India.

The company created International Stadia Group to try that marketing and financing model in the U.S., and recently agreed to a formal study of the possibility of building a new downtown arena for the Kentucky Wildcats.

City Finance Director Don Herz said he can’t see any downsides to the International Stadia Group idea. For every dollar they invest in the project, that’s one less dollar the city has to get from taxpayers, shifting risk to the private sector, he said.

IMG is familiar with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln already because it handles media and marketing for the Athletic Department, as well as other Big 12 schools. In June, the Athletic Department signed a 13-year contract with IMG worth up to $112.5 million to the Huskers — one of the largest contracts of its kind.

IMG sees college sports as a growth industry, and approached UNL officials with the arena idea this summer. Their major funding source is Goldman Sachs.

UNL Athletic Director Tom Osborne said once International Stadia Group has finished its preliminary research, “they’ll come back and we’ll sit down and talk.”

He said if International Stadia Group fronted $160 million of the cost, and with some private contributions from groups like 2015 Vision, the city’s cost could drop to $70 million.

“Hopefully that would make it more palatable,” he said.

What’s the tradeoff? International Stadia Group would make as much money as possible off of things like club suites, premium seating, naming rights, merchandise licensing, concessions, signage and sponsorships. But International Stadia Group wouldn’t own or manage the arena unless the city wanted it to, city officials said.

The city’s arena coordinator, Kent Morgan, said it’s up to the city to choose from a menu of service options the company can provide. He said International Stadia Group would be in a better position to land lucrative national advertisers and deals because of its connections.

IMG is a division of global sports and entertainment giant IMG Worldwide, which operates in 30 countries doing everything from managing Tiger Woods’ career to producing Fashion Week.

Even if the company did finance the arena, a public vote would still be needed to finance supporting infrastructure, such as streets and land purchases. Mayor Chris Beutler said he still plans to seek a public vote on a new arena in the spring.

In other arena developments, an arena design committee is leaning toward:

* Not including a hotel as part of the arena. The developer the city is working with on accompanying arena offices and retail and restaurants, Lincoln Traction Partners, says two hotels are already planned nearby in the next two years.

* Extending R and Q streets west into the arena development area and allowing vehicles on them, except during some events.

* Closing Seventh Street from Q to R and converting that into a public space of some kind, perhaps an ice skating rink.

* Connecting streets near Memorial Stadium to the arena development through new connections that include peanut-shaped roundabouts.

" i hope this goes through... sounds great to me!! im am sure there is going to STILL be a lot of negative comments from people on here regarding this... as it appears they have nothing better to do than complain about progress in this city. "

" I guess it depends on your idea of progress...which I don't consider this. Progress is getting Lincoln to stop the good ol' boy network and actually recognize it's a city of 250,000 and not a town of 25,000. Progress is getting Lincoln to finally realize it's not Omaha and will not attract big name acts.

That being said, I really hope IMG comes through on this. This would be a fantastic deal for the city and replace Pershing, which absolutely needs to happen. Both Devaney and Pershing are embarassments to this city and need replacements. $90 million would be a bargain. "

" This would be fabulous, and I'm also ready to sign on the dotted line.

And I wish people would quit with the belief that Lincoln wants to be Omaha. I am absolutely certain MOST Lincolnites have NO desire to be anything like Omaha. Will we beat out Omaha for big name acts? Most often not, I'm sure. But, there are lots we will get, and yes this is definitely progress. Let's don't blow this, and thanks Vision2015 for all of your effort! "

" Gee...I wonder why Pershing is having trouble attracting "Big name acts" into the 50+ year old facility. Despite that, they do have the Stone Temple Pilots booked there October 28th. Imagine what they could do with a state of the art facility? "

" Enhance the Haymarket!!! What's there is great, but it could use some help & this would be great for the downtown, the entire city & the state of Nebraska! Lincoln needs a strong city core! I can't wait to take my kids somewhere more lively. "

" Will IMG then have decision making power to hire and fire coaches for example?
Or picking out the color of uniforms or designs?
This seems too good to be true.

" Who is the 'outstanding' road designer who dreams up these roundabouts. They are a waste of space, dangerous, confusing, and hard to move snow around. Leave the roundabouts to Europe. We are in Nebraska and don't need more wasted concrete and space..... The arena - if someone else wants to fund the thing - great! Bring it on. Otherwise, I not voting for it. "

" The Devaney Center was built and I know a lot of people were excited back then because the Pershing was falling apart. But wait! They couldn't have any type of show there that would possibly harm the floor...or wait...is that the reason we don't have concerts at Memorial Stadium?? Anyone remember Farm Aid at Memorial Stadium?? Has there ever been any other concerts at Memorial? Paul McCartney at Arrowhead Stadium in KC?..great show, U2-Arrowhead Stadium, Billy Joel AND Elton John..Arrowhead Stadium. All great, sold out shows. As far as I know..they still play football there. I have spent well over $1000 dollars this month alone on entertainment. NASCAR Race weekend in Kansas City, plus the very beautiful Argosy Casino. I still have tickets for three concerts yet to come...all in Omaha, which I'll go to the casino in Iowa while we're there, plus hotel. Oh and gas is cheaper so will be filling up there.
I'd rather my money stay here, where I am raising my family, where I have my business. But I don't see any type of NASCAR anything coming to this area (yes I am all for the Sanford Drag Strip!) and I sure don't see any big name acts Eagles?? Neil Young?? coming to the Pershing anytime soon. I'm not much into going to the bars where the drunk, young adults, puke on themselves. The Lincoln/Haymarket area is very enjoyable over the summer when the campus is somewhat empty...my opinion! I guess I do have tickets for a show at the Pershing...my three and four year old niece's just can't wait for Winnie the Pooh Live! Let's just hope there isn't a huge line to the restroom!! :) "

" You're right. Lincolnites have no desire to be like nor compete with Omaha. Now get the elected officials to stop thinking that way. That's the "Lincoln" I'm referring too... "

" Now the Mayor will let you vote! Remember, where is the other 90 million coming from??????? Smoke and mirrors coming. Plus is the limit the 90 million, remember we have to pay 2015 group back for the upfront work to brain wash you. "

" The taxpayer says : DO IT, yeah less taxes.
My wallet says: DO IT, yeah less taxes
OLD people says: nothing, keep them quiet for a change.

This sounds like a great idea. This would get my support for sure, if they could do it this way. I would rather a for profit entity run a new arena than local government. "

" The city can’t afford to mow the parks, fix the streets, staff the libraries or pools but we are to believe it can pay even $90 million for the improved infrastructure for this arena? Are we to be confident that Goldman Sachs is the money behind IMG? Call me a cynic but I think this is all smoke and mirrors to get this project “too big to fail”. Once the taxpayer is on the hook for a few million we have no choice but to proceed. "
