The clock is ticking for more than 2,300 people in Lincoln who have economic stimulus payments due from the federal government.

They have just one week — until Oct. 15 — to finish and mail the paperwork so they can get the $300 per person or $600 check from the government.

These are generally people older than 65 or people who are disabled and normally do not file tax returns because their income is low.

About the payments

You can get information on the stimulus payment and the packet of information (1040A-3) online, by phone and at taxpayer assistance offices.

* Lincoln Assistance Office: 100 Centennial Mall North.

* (800) 829-1040.

* www.IRS.gov.

People who have no tax liability but still qualify for the payment must have at least $3,000 in qualifying income from earned income, nontaxable combat pay, as well as certain benefits from Social Security, Veteran Affairs and railroad retirement, according to the IRS release.

Qualifying income from Social Security includes retirement, disability and survivor benefits. Supplemental Security Income is not a qualifying income.

Qualifying income from Veteran Affairs includes disability compensation, disability pension and survivor benefits.

People who requested an extension from the April 15 filing deadline also have until the Oct. 15 deadline to be eligible for the economic stimulus benefit.

People who did not file tax returns this year didn’t get their tax stimulus payments automatically, said IRS spokesman Christopher Miller.

The IRS estimates that about 20,150 Nebraskans haven’t filed to receive stimulus payments.

That includes about 2,360 people in Lincoln and another 150 in Lancaster County, Miller said.

The IRS also provided estimates for other larger towns: 460 in Beatrice; 678 in Grand Island; 5,136 in Omaha; and 423 in Bellevue.

Miller suggested that people who can lend a hand to parents, grandparents, friends or neighbors who might be in this position.
