Crusaders face tough weekend

Grand Island Central Catholic will be putting its Class C-1, No. 1 volleyball ranking on the line both at home and on the road this weekend. The Crusaders are at C-1, No. 2 Columbus Scotus tonight before returning home to host the six-team Grand Island Central Catholic Invitational Saturday.

GICC is one of three No. 1 teams in the field, joining Class B, No. 1 Northwest and C-2, No. 1 Ravenna. Aurora (B, No. 4) and Omaha Mercy (B, No. 7) are the other rated schools in the tournament.

Five players earn national recognition

Five Nebraska players were included in PrepVolleyball.com’s national list of the top 100 seniors recently released. Lincoln Pius X setter Lauren Cook (UCLA recruit) was No. 18 with Papillion-La Vista outside hitter Gina Mancuso (Nebraska) not far behind at No. 20. Others selected were Johnson County Central middle blocker Jamie Straube (No. 22, Iowa State), Ewing middle Hayley Thramer (No. 64, Nebraska) and Papillion-La Vista setter Chelsey Feekin (No. 72, Wichita State).
