Prep 2-a-days: District B-3
By LINCOLN JOURNAL STAR
A CLOSER LOOK
Waverly
Head coach Mike Johnson believes this year’s Vikings squad will the school’s best since the 2004 squad that reached the Class B semifinals.
Waverly has six starters returning on both sides of the ball.
On offense, Waverly will shift junior Tyler Evans from running back to quarterback. Tyler Mertens and Jarad Henry will be the featured backs, and an experienced offensive line will look to give the talented backfield holes.
Defensively, the Vikings return all three linebackers.
Besides the teams in the district, the Vikings’ schedule features a Sept. 26 road game against two-time defending state champion Crete and a home game against Beatrice the following week.
DISTRICT B-3
Omaha Skutt returns only three starters from last year, but head coach Matt Turman is excited about the skill position players he has coming back. If the inexperienced offensive line can become solid, the SkyHawks will be tough. Skutt will face Waverly Oct. 17.
Gretna brings back nine starters on offense and seven on defense from last year’s 3-6 squad.
Platteview returns seven starters on both sides of the ball, and running back Joseph Fauver will return after missing all of last season with an ACL injury.
PLAYMAKERS
Junior Christian Dudzik will take over the quarterback position at Skutt and is expected to shine.
Waverly’s John Greve started at defensive end and offensive tackle as a sophomore.
Gretna’s Brandon Hubert had 34 tackles last year. On offense, Hubert gained 332 yards receiving.
COACHES’ PREDICTIONS
1. Omaha Skutt. 2. Waverly. 3. Gretna. 4. Platteview.
