Yet another Texan commits to NU
For the third day in a row, there comes news of a Husker football commitment. He’s from Texas, of course.
Offensive guard Nick Ash on Thursday became the latest addition to the list of NU’s 2009 commitments, which now has nine names on it. Six are from Texas.
“It’s pretty cool you got a lot of Texas guys up there,” said Ash, who told NU coaches of his decision Wednesday.
The native of Keller, Texas, is 6-foot-5 and 265 pounds, and according to his prep coach, Kevin Atkinson: “He’s very intelligent, an AP (advanced placement) student. He’s got great feet, very agile. He’s somebody whose upside I think is tremendous. He’s got a big frame, but he’s still kind of a late bloomer. I think he’s got a lot of growing still going on.”
Ash was rated No. 44 among offensive guards by Scout.com. He is rated 27th at his position by Rivals.com. He had offers from Arizona, TCU, Washington State, Texas Tech, Purdue and Vanderbilt.
But after a visit to Nebraska for the Spring Game, it became obvious to him the Huskers were at the top of the list.
“To bring in 81,000 people for a spring game, that’s phenomenal,” said Ash, whose high school team finished 4-6 last year in Class 5A. “I was just very impressed with the fan support.”
Ash could play guard or tackle in college.
“They really liked how mobile I was,” he said.
Husker offensive line coach Barney Cotton and defensive coordinator Carl Pelini were his primary recruiters.
While Ash’s main focus is football, Atkinson said he’s one of those athletes who can excel at whatever he’s doing.
When he was playing softball and pick-up basketball with teammates this summer, Atkinson couldn’t help but notice how the big man moved around like a skill-position player.
“He has cat-like reactions when he plays,” Atkinson said.
Ash is the third Texan to commit to the Huskers this week.
Offensive lineman Jess Coffey, of Denton, and defensive end Emerson Evans, of Houston, also said they plan to sign with Nebraska.
“I think Bo (Pelini) is just very dynamic,” Atkinson said. “That was (Ash’s) first attraction. Then he visited for the Spring Game and saw the facilities and how fanatic the fans are there in Nebraska. That was huge.”
